Youth in Action develops the youth in the north

The organisation aims to make a difference in the lives of the youth of Soshanguve.

A local organisation has stepped in to make the lives of Soshanguve youth better.

Non-profit, Youth in Action (Yia), helps to uplift, develop and create more opportunities for the youth.

Founder Karabo Maseko (30) said the organisation was started in order to make the youth see the importance of living a focused life.

“We saw the need to keep the youth busy as we saw that drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and theft are becoming a serious problem in our country,” he said.

“Most of our youth become victims of drug abuse and teen age pregnancy because of lack of knowledge.”

Maseko said the organisation does not only focus on keeping the youth busy but also considers the community as a whole.

“We sometimes donate goods and necessities to our community in Soshanguve,” he said.

“Our organisation has an open door for any person who may wish to donate anything they want to give away, so that we may donate to the needy.”

Maseko said Yia provided youth with various activities.

“Yia has sports practises weekly, psychological classes where we share our difficulties, interaction classes were we share future plans and the importance of being independent, talent classes were the youth showcase their different talents,” said Maseko.

Yia manager Neo Masumbuka said working with the youth was not easy.

“Working with the youth is not [as] easy as it seems, we sometimes face more difficult situations but finding solutions and working on maintaining peace always work out,” she said.

“We always have to be patient with every child in order for them to feel welcome, encourage them not – discourage them.”

She said Yia’s main idea was to inspire the community and bring them together.

“Our community is quick to judge, rather than producing a solution. So we have created a platform where our youth can come to us when they have challenges or need help.” she said.

“The community should take part in such organisations, our door is always open to anyone who would want to join,” said Masumbuka.

Yia member Daniel Mochaki (18) said that he enjoyed spending most of his time at the organisation.

“The organisation keeps us away from wrong things that most of my peers are doing in their spare time, Yia is very useful,” he said.

“I am very happy with the organisation as it is made to uplift our lives in a positive way, we gain a lot from Yia it helps us take charge of our lives and be responsible for our own decisions.”

Mochaki said such opportunities cannot be underestimated.
