Residents raise awareness, funds for Wollies

“A portion of the profits made from each market goes towards Wollies. Wollies, who are in dire need of animal food, especially cat food.”

The Pretoria North Farmers Market raised awareness of and collected food for local animal shelter Wollies at the weekend.

The market, held on the Wollies premise, kicked off the awareness campaign by informing the public about animal abuse and raising funds for Wollies.

KykNET Getroud met Rugby actor Blitz Vermeulen joined the awareness campaign.

“A portion of the profits made from each market goes towards Wollies. Wollies, who are in dire need of animal food, especially cat food.”

Residents also took dogs from Wollies for a walk from Berg Avenue to Brits Road.

“We aim to create awareness at the Pretoria North market every Saturday from 08:00 to 14:00 to inform the public of our market and involvement in welfare projects, create awareness for Wollies and educate the public against cruelty, animal abuse and the role Wollies plays in our community,” organiser Githea Landsberg said.

“Wollies urgently needs the public’s help to care for all the animals by donating dog or cat food. Wollies has fat bills to pay and we want to inspire people to adopt dogs and cats rather than support breeders.”

Landsberg said the weekly market would continue despite the coronavirus outbreak.

She said the open air market is safer than a local mall, and was for a good cause.

“We have taken the necessary precautions for this coming week’s market and will have sanitiser, gloves and masks available.”

She said the market provided an extra income to Wollies, and if cancelled, the shelter could suffer.
