Hennops clean up a raging success

The group managed to remove a few unexpected items such as blankets, tyres and a gun holster with two sandbags attached to it.

About 40 tyres, five shopping trolleys and a steel rubbish bin were all dragged from the lake near Centurion Hotel during a clean-up operation on Sunday.

This was in addition to 399 bags of rubbish, according to Hennops Revival founder Tarryn Johnston.

“The total amount of rubbish accumulated came to roughly 12 000kg,” she said.

“Seeff Centurion has pledged to pay Hennops Revival R5 for each bag of rubbish we remove from the Hennops during our clean-ups.”

“This money is used to pay casual workers, buy tools and river gear and also to pay certain running costs for the clean ups to continue.”

Johnston said she would like to see more businesses getting involved in this way.

Johnston said that the group covered the largest area yet on Sunday’ with community members supporting the group all the way.

“Asez World Mission Society came with 50 volunteers, the 9th Irene Scouts joined with a group of six people, and the rest were volunteers from Centurion and Johannesburg.”

The group managed to remove a few unexpected items from the site such as blankets and the tyres that were well-wedged into the river sand, making them very difficult to retrieve.

“One of our volunteers, Braam Steytler found a gun holster with two sandbags attached to it; we are assuming that it was evidence that someone tried to get rid of, we did not find the gun,” Johnston told Rekord.

Johnston said one of the highlights was children praying and sending love towards the river to encourage the volunteers.

“We would like to urge more who feel called to join us at the next clean up on 21 and 22 March.

“They can contact me on 082-460-2899 or tarryn@hennopsrevival.co.za,” she said.
