DA promises to get Tshwane house in order

DA mayoral candidate Randall Williams said the party has called for internal investigations to determine if the metro complied with all the prescribed legislation with diligence.

The DA has committed to addressing the residents’ concerns governance and compliance in the Tshwane metro, the party has said.

DA mayoral candidate Randall Williams said the party has called for internal investigations to determine if the metro complied with all the prescribed legislation with diligence.

Among the issues he said needed probing are:

– Wonderboom national airport

– Rooiwal water treatment plant

– The Fresh Produce Market

– Insourcing of capacity workers

– The roll-out of prepaid electricity meters;

“We are committed to maintaining clean governance that is free of corruption, maladministration or wasteful expenditure,” said Williams.

He said his party would take action against anyone found to have contravened legislation.

“Where necessary, a turnaround strategy will be established to fix any issues that might have resulted from poor performance over the last few months,” he said.

Williams said the metro planned to do the following to shift its focus to “consistent world class services” for the residents:

– Prioritise operational expenditure to front-line service delivery at regional operation centres;

– Prioritise the roll-out of prepaid meters and setting fixed annual targets;

– Focus on reducing water and electricity leakages;

– Ensure the institutionalisation of cost containment policy particularly in terms of use of external consultants;

– Implement blacklisting processes for poorly performing service providers;

– Ensure regional operation centres take centre stage in the next year, increase operational funding and pressure on recruitment of technical specialists;

– Implement an aggressive streetlight repair programme and setting a minimum target of 85 percent illumination per ward;

– Implement region-specific timetables for grass cutting, litter clearing and routine infrastructure repairs across various wards to ensure tracking and accountability

Williams added there were plans establish a task team to accelerate service delivery and improve service and governance.

Party federal council chairperson Helen Zille earlier this week, announced Williams as DA candidate to replace outgoing mayor Stevens Mokgalapa.

“Councillor Williams has been a long-serving councillor who served as a MMC for economic development and spatial planning and as chair of the municipal appeals tribunal between 2016 and 2019,” she said.

Mokgalapa announced his resignation at the beginning of the month, saying it had been a “tough” decision.

“In my view, stepping down would pave the way for further progress beyond that which was achieved in my term this far,” his resignation statement partly read.
