DA confident over their Tshwane mayoral candidate, Randall Williams

"We believe Williams is an excellent mayoral candidate," says Helen Zille.

The DA announced Randall Williams as its candidate for the position of executive mayor of the DA-led metro of Tshwane, following Stevens Mokgalapa’s resignation.

According to the DA, Williams had been a long-serving councillor who served as an MMC for economic development and spatial planning. He also served as a chairman of the municipal appeals tribunal between 2016 and 2019.

DA federal council chairperson, Helen Zille, said in a statement that Williams was an “excellent mayoral candidate”.

“We congratulate Williams on his election as mayoral candidate, and trust that he will serve the people of Tshwane well as an executive mayor and we commit our support to him unconditionally in the pursuit of creating one South Africa for all,” Zille said.

Williams beat council speaker Katlego Mathebe and DA regional chairperson and former acting mayor Abel Tau who were also interviewed for the position.

The appointment of Williams comes after out-going mayor Mokgalapa announced his resignation earlier this month.
