Menlo Park Car Boot Sale, “the best second-hand family market in Pretoria”, was held at Pretoria Municipality Recreation Club on Sunday.
Helga Roper, sale co-founder, said in the two years since inception in Menlopark, the event has grown to attract a following from all over Gauteng.
“Our purpose is to reuse, re-purpose, recycle and reduce waste. Car boot sales offer a way of attracting a large group of people in one place to recycle useful but unwanted domestic items that otherwise might have been thrown away.”
“The rotation of surplus household stock is essential as it prevents waste and disposal costs, and My Car Boot Sale established a community where thriftiness and entrepreneurship flourish.”
Roper said it was encouraging to see young people buying in to the idea of dressing, and decorating with vintage items.

“Many families have moved through our markets in the last two years, and sold off their surplus belongings in order to move into smaller homes, or emigrate.”
The cash comes in handy in these circumstances and the collectors flock to the car boot sales to pick up treasures as you can find antiques, vintage clothing, household and garden goods, photographic and sound equipment, kids and babies’ items, tools, books and music and jewellery there.
The next Car Boot Sale will be held at the Pretoria High School Old Boys Club on Saturday from 08:00 to 13:00.
