Police officer commits suicide at Brooklyn SAPS

“The police officer suddenly grabbed his commander’s firearm and shot himself.”

The Brooklyn police station started the year on a sad note when an off-duty police officer committed suicide.

Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the officer was from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Brooklyn and he committed suicide at the police station just hours before the new year.

Weilbach said “On Tuesday at about 15:00 the 37-year-old off-duty constable from Brooklyn SAPS was in conversation with his commander and other colleagues.”

She said the commander and colleagues of the officer was trying to assist him by arranging medical help for him as he was allegedly experiencing personal problems.

“While in conversation, the police officer suddenly grabbed his commander’s firearm and shot himself,” Weilbach said.

Weilbach said the police officer was certified dead by emergency services on the scene.

“Trauma supporters were called out to debrief shocked and bereaved colleagues who witness the whole incident,” she said.

Weilbach said the Acting Station Commander, Colonel Gerhard Olivier said the whole station was still shocked and saddened by the whole incident.

“Olivier conveys his deepest condolences to the member’s family and prayers for his extended police family in Brooklyn police station,” Weilbach said.
