VIDEO: Climate change poses a risk to health

Globally, September 2019 was the hottest month ever recorded.

The high temperatures that continue to increase impact people’s morality.

This was brought to light during a media briefing on climate change at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on Thursday.

“Climate change is expected to have large impacts on health,” CSIR environmental health scientist, Juanette John, said.

She explained climate change would have multiple impacts on human health.

Some of the impacts she highlighted included people’s health status, fitness, personal behaviour and the type of housing opted for.

“There are many factors that influence individual and community-level vulnerability to heat events,” she said.

Meanwhile, CSIR meteorologist Johan Malherbe said September was the hottest month ever recorded worldwide.

Malherbe said it was in accordance with data collected since 1818.

“In October the northern parts were much hotter and in Pretoria we would have felt the very high temperatures that occurred over the past few years until now.”
