UPDATE: UP rape accused student gets bail

The student is accused of raping a colleague he staying with in the same building.

The University of Pretoria student accused of raping a fellow student was granted R1 000 bail on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old student appeared in the Pretoria magistrate court.

He is accused of raping the 19-year-old student in September 2018, when they were staying in the same building in Hatfield.

The international relations student proclaimed his innocence against the charge laid against him in an affidavit read in as support for bail by his attorney.

On Tuesday, the alleged rape survivor alongside a group of other students marched to the Brooklyn police station to ensure the 22-year-old suspect was indeed arrested as police had promised.

The student said she decided to open the case against the 22-year-old after learning of the death of a student at a Cape

Town university who was found raped and murdered on Monday afternoon.

“It reminded me that my rapist was still on the loose because I haven’t reported him yet and because of fear and stigmatisation,” she said.

The suspect was due to return to court on 29 October.
