No protest action expected in Pretoria – cops

There were no protest actions expected on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, police said.

After several protest actions that took place in Pretoria this week, police said no disruption was expected on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

This past week, Pretoria has been overwhelmed by violent protests prompted by taxi drivers confronting alleged drug peddlers near the Bloed Street taxi rank in Central Pretoria.

The protest, however, was called off on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Augistinah Selepe said they were not aware of any planned protests on Thursday.

“We are not aware of anything,” she said.

In the east of Pretoria, University of Pretoria students took to the streets on Tuesday, after one of their own was arrested following a charge of rape opened against him.

The students took to the streets of Hatfield and marched to the Brooklyn police station on Tuesday afternoon.

Prior to the student-organised march, the university held a vigil for all students affected by issues related to gender-based violence and the ongoing scourge of xenophobic attacks in the country.

Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Collette Weilbach said they were also not aware of any planned protest in their precinct.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba also confirmed that they were not aware of anything planned.
