NEWSFLASH: Pretoria protests to continue on Tuesday

Commuters were urged to take precautions and use alternative routes to avoid road closures, congestion and disruptions.

The Tshwane metro anticipates the taxi drivers who protested in the CBD on Monday would continue their protest action on Tuesday.

Taxi drivers were expected to assemble at 04:00 on Tuesday to block all routes into the city centre, according to acting roads and transport MMC Alderman Karen Meyer.

Meyer, who is also MMC for community safety in Tshwane, said the drivers would be targeting Marabastad and Sunnyside in particular.

“Commuters were accordingly advised to take the necessary precautions or use alternative routes to avoid road closures, traffic congestion and public transport service disruptions,” she said.

“Residents were also encouraged to monitor local media outlets for developments throughout the day.”

Meyer again called on taxi owners and associations to engage their drivers and ensure the return of orderly business operations.

“The metro condemns any criminal behaviour in the strongest terms possible,” she said.

“I also call on police to ensure those who engaged in lawless and criminal behaviour were apprehended and brought to book swiftly.”

Meyer said metro police would play a supporting role under the direction and instruction of police.

“The nature and extent of public order disruption in the on-going protest action has escalated the situation to a level within the sole legal mandate and command and control of the police.”

“It is therefore imperative that police take the necessary steps to restore law and order across the metro.”
