East school learners wow festival goers

The 18th Crawford College Pretoria Concerto festival once agai wowed all in attendance.

Crawford College Pretoria pupils blew concert-goers away during a festival at the weekend.

The eight learners performed with the University of Pretoria symphony orchestra conducted by Gerben Grooten, in the absence of a previous conductor, the Johannesburg symphony orchestra’s Eric Roycroft, who was reportedly suffering ill-health.

Those chosen to perform showcased their talents through singing, playing the piano and guitar.

School principal Andre Botha said the festival was the brainchild of Marius du Plessis.

“He wanted to organise something special, not just another school play or concert.”

Botha said the festival always aimed to get better every year.

“This is the Crawford difference.

“We create opportunities for our students and it’s up to them to take those opportunities,” Botha said.

Grooten said he has been involved with music from a young age, and travelled with orchestras from the young age of 14.

The learners played a variety of classical compositions and one learner sang “Can’t help loving that man” from Showboat by Kern and Hammerstein.
