Deadline looming for online applications – Gauteng education department

There is one day left for the Gauteng department of education’s online applications for 2020 admissions.
The application period opened on 20 May and will close on Monday, 22 July at midnight.
“We would like to caution parents who have not yet applied for admission of learners to be admitted to Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2020, that they have exactly one school day left to apply,” said department spokesperson Steve Mabona.
MEC Panyaza Lesufi said they were pleased that people have embraced the use of the online application system.
“This ground-breaking online application system has provided the department with credible and reliable information,” he said.

“We will, therefore, continue to enhance this system and link it to other existing government systems, to further strengthen the credibility of the information attained.”
Mabona said the highest number of applications was recorded for admissions 2020 when the system went live.
He said 220 802 applications (105 241 for Grade 1 and 115 561 for Grade 8) were recorded at that time.
“This reflects an increase of 146 964 [67%] applications compared to the opening day of admissions in 2019, which had 73 838 applications [39 212 for Grade 1 and 34 626 for Grade 8] registered,” he said.
Mabona said on 17 July, 298 003 applications (154 264 for Grade 1 and 143 739 for Grade 8) were registered for the 2020 academic year.

“The department also allowed that the application period remain open for applications during the June/July school holidays, essentially allowing parents an additional 15 weekdays to make applications,” he said.
“Our records reflect that parents took full advantage of this opportunity, as 8 069 applications were registered during that period.”
However, Mabona added that 62 028 of the 298 003 applicants had not yet submitted the required documents to schools.
“Parents will not receive offers of placement from schools where no documents were submitted,” he said.
“However, to accommodate parents who could not submit documents within seven days following the application and those who made applications during the school holidays, provision has been made for schools to accept documents until 31 July at 14:00.”

He said that when submitting documents, parents must receive a receipt to acknowledge the submission of documents accordingly.
