UPDATE: Moreleta Park church plans to move on hold

A meeting held at the end of May has put the proposed plans to break away from the NG church on hold, at least for now.

The Moreleta Park megachurch in the east of Pretoria will remain part of the Dutch Reformed church (NG church) – for now.

This decision follows a meeting held between leaders of the Moreleta Park church and the service council of the eastern synod at the end of May.

“We have listened with much understanding to Moreleta Park’s history and we take note of the concerns surrounding it,” confirmed the executive official of the eastern synod Francois Retief.

“As a result from the discussion, Moreleta Park decided to not make any changes to its religious affiliation right now. There is a mutual commitment for future discussions and transparency.”

Meanwhile, a member of the church who asked to remain anonymous contacted Rekord to discuss his dissatisfaction with the church’s decision to break away from the NG church.

The member claimed many others were also upset about the proposed move from the NG church.

“Both my wife and I are very upset about the news. No one has discussed this with us,” the upset congregant said.

The Moreleta Park church community manager Pieter Breytenbach told Rekord finances did not play a role in consideration to break away from the NG church.

According to Breytenbach, the discussions to join hands with the Hillsong ministry has also been placed on ice.

“Of the members who originally responded to the survey, 100% said that we can no longer move forward with how it is currently going in the NG church,” he said.

“We are still, however, in the process and members are still invited to make contact, give feedback and ask questions. We are trying to answer all the queries and really encourage the members of the church to attend the information meetings,” Breytenbach said.
