Central police nabs 53 people for various crimes

About 53 people were arrested in the Pretoria CBD in the past four days.

Among the arrested, was a 34 year-old man who had tried to rob a man of his cellphone and cash at gunpoint.

Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the victim immediately alerted police.

“Through swift reaction by police the suspect was apprehended. The suspect is linked to several cases which include murder,”she said.

“Other perpetrators were arrested for different crimes such as common robberies, theft, possession of stolen property, possession of drugs, possession of dagga, possession of dangerous weapons, assault, grievous bodily harm, rape, robbery with a firearm, drunken driving, shoplifting and undocumented foreign nationals.”

Selepe said the crime prevention unit continues to work around the clock to insure that crime is defeated.

“More than 15 suspects for possession of drugs were arrested and two for dealing in drugs in a crime prevention effort led by Captain Michael Mbewe.”

Selepe also warned of the increase in thefts out of motor vehicle.

“Many cases are open of these specific crimes and usually items such as cellphones, and laptops are taken. This happens often because drivers leave their belongings inside the car,” she said.

She urged motorists to be vigilant and not leave any valuables in the car.

“Take note that when you get out of the car, these criminals are conducting observations. They can spot what’s inside the car. We warn drivers when leaving their cars to be vigilant.”

Selepe also warned pedestrians to be alert when walking in the CBD.

“Pickpocketing [is] on the rise. Don’t put your cash and cellphones in the backpack or jacket pockets especially now in winter,” Selepe said.

“A case was reported whereby the victim was approached by four female suspects, two started a conversation with her, in the process the other two grabbed her bag and ran away.”
