East police, learners to work together against crime

Learners had demanded that the police take their safety seriously, arrest drug dealers, make themselves visible in the community and also called for qualified guards at schools and the recruitment of youth to CPF.

The Mamelodi West police and local learners have reached an agreement to work together to combat crime.

Early last month the learners, led by Cosas, marched to the police station to hand over a memorandum demanding that the police create a safe environment for local learners.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso while giving feedback on what had been done since the memorandum hand over on the 8 March, said the two parties had reached an agreement to work together to mobilise the youth and community against crime.

“We also agreed to revive the youth crime prevention desk in Mamelodi,” he said, adding this would be done within two weeks.

“All youth formations in Mamelodi must be part of the desk.”

Cosas representatives promised to take the message to all high schools in Mamelodi.

Maheso said the police also gave out the hotline number for the new combat and reaction team deployed in the area by the minister of police.

Cosas member Thabo Ngwenya said the learners had demanded that the police take their safety seriously, arrest drug dealers, make themselves visible in the community and also called for qualified guards at schools and the recruitment of youth to CPF.

Maheso said the learners had said they were willing to report any crime to the police.

The feedback meeting at the Mamelodi West police station was also attended by the local CPF.
