Cutting red tape to roll out red carpet for business – mayor

“Many times we have found by the time we as the metro approve building plans the contractor had already built the building.”

Red tape and a lack of automated systems at the metro are hindering business development in the capital, according to Tshwane mayor Stevens Mokgalapa.

Mokgalapa made the remarks at the first Tshwane Business Breakfast at the Maslow Hotel at Times Square in Pretoria on Thursday morning.

It is an initiative started by the metro together with the Tshwane Economic Development Agency (TEDA) and the Capital City Business Chamber (CCBC).

The event seeks to create a forum where businesses from various industries across the capital can engage with the metro and each other to promote development.

“Many times we have found by the time, we as the metro approve building plans, the contractor had already built the building,” said Mokgalapa.

“We must cut red tape and ensure we place development at the centre. We need to partner with the private sector. To do that we need to create an environment conducive for the private sector. When we cut the red tape, we will roll out the red carpet for business.”

More needed to be done to advance technology and fast-track automation at the metro, he said.

“We need to automate our systems so that they are quicker and more efficient,” he said.

“We need to move with the times.”

TEDA CEO Solly Mokgaladi said the retention and expansion of business in the capital was vital to changing the economic landscape.

“Through our partnership with CCBC our work is further being enabled,” he said.

“Together with them and the metro we hope to promote Tshwane as an investment destination. Investing in the city and developing its people are also vital.”
