Teenager points toy gun at another learner at east school

It is alleged that a 16-year-old boy pointed a gun, which was not immediately recognised as a toy, at a Grade 8 learner.

A 16-year-old boy was caught pointing a toy gun at another learner at the Wozanibone Secondary School in the east of Pretoria last week.

“It is alleged that a 16-year-old boy pointed his gun at a Grade 8 learner who was on her way to attend a school health awareness campaign conducted by Welbekend police,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Tsietsi Lamola.

Lamola said police were informed and disarmed the learner.

“Through a strategic crime prevention approach, it was found that the boy was really armed with a plastic firearm,” he said.

“Necessary steps were taken, procedures were followed until the boy was taken to the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court the following day.”

Lamola said the boy was later released into the custody of his parents on condition that he must not be found guilty or commit the same offence for a period of two months.

Besides the gun incident, Lamola said the reproductive health awareness campaign was well received by the school in Kanana informal settlement.

The school was also visited by the social crime prevention unit in collaboration with the departments of health and education.

Lamola said the campaign was made for learners to be aware of their health, particularly the risk of engaging in sexual activities at an early age and teenage pregnancy.

“This awareness is intended to reduce the spread of both human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) by providing knowledge on prevention strategies,” he said.

“This includes abstinence or the delay of sexual intercourse, being tested for HIV and using condoms to prevent the spread of HIV and STI’s as well as the prevention of teenage pregnancy.”
