UPDATE: Khoisan activists to continue camping at Union Buildings after Cape visit

The aim of the visit was to mobilise communities to join the self-governance movement.

The four Khoisan activists who recently camped at the Union Buildings, are now in Western Cape to mobilise communities to join their self-governance movement.

The Khoisan community announced its wish to self-govern on 1 January, as they felt “marginalised by the South African government”.

The activists camped at the Union Buildings for two months demanding to see president Cyril Ramaphosa.

In Cape Town, they hoped to submit their memorandum of demands to any government minister at the state of the nation address last Thursday.

“We did not arrive on time, so we thought it might be best if we started mobilising communities in the Western Cape,” said group leader Chief KhoiSan SA.

He said they have extended their visit until Monday, 18 February so they can speak to various chiefs and leaders about self-governance and how the process would unfold.

“Areas that we visited was Mitchell Plain, Eerste Rivier, Wemmershoek and it will continue throughout the Western Cape until Monday, thereafter to all the other provinces in the country. It will also be part of the awareness of our culture and heritage to the various communities, schools in the various town and cities,” said Chief KhoisanSA.

The group wants the government to recognise them as “the first nation of South Africa”, to be included in decision-making and for their language, Khoe-khoeaab, to be recognised as an official language of the country.

Another demand was for the land claims of 1913 to be scrapped because they were “withholding their claims as the true owners of the land”.

They also want the coloured identity to be scrapped from Z83 government forms and all other forms of identification.
