New mayor warned by ANC, EFF

“Do what the people want, we hope you will serve the people of Tshwane, if not, the ANC will rise like a sea and you will be wiped out.”

Newly elected mayor Stevens Mokgalapa has been warned by the opposition parties ANC and the EFF in Tshwane.

Mokgalapa was elected in council today without any other party putting forward a candidate to challenge, resulting in him being the new mayor of Tshwane.

Speaking in council Mokgalapa called on other parties in council to join hands with him in serving the people of Tshwane.

A special council sitting was held to elect a new mayor following the resignation of Solly Msimanga who vacated his office to focus on his premiership candidacy.

Giving his inaugural speech Mokgalapa reached out to the EFF, stating that they are needed to come on board and assist to bring service delivery to Tshwane residents.

“Let’s work together. My primary focus is service delivery.”

Speaking to the ANC, Mokgalapa said the ANC had to do its job and that he was willing to get criticism.

Mokgalapa also revealed that he would be having a meeting with the city manager to craft a way forward regarding the contentious Glad Africa contract and to look for ways to remove the city from the contract.

“I am looking forward to working with my mayoral committee, caucus, coalition partners and anyone in council who wants to put the people of Tshwane first to achieve these priorities.”

In response, Tshwane ANC regional leader Kgosi Maepa said that the DA went from bad to worse, stating that Mokgalapa inherited a wrecked council from his predecessor.

“There is nothing you are inheriting. You are inheriting a broken vehicle… brace yourself,” said Maepa.

“Do what the people want, we hope you will serve the people of Tshwane if not, the ANC will rise like a sea and you will be wiped out.”

Maepa said Mokgalapa had a big task and had to deal with the irregular appointments made in the city and follow through on the auditor-general’s report and recommendations.

The EFF in response said they did not want to vote in the electing of the mayor as there was little known about Mokgalapa.

“We cannot risk the similar mistake we made with Solly Msimanga.”

“We asked Solly Msimanga for insourcing and he couldn’t deliver on that, if you fail at this task you will also be gone,” Mabogwana warned.
