One learner at Loreto Convent School failed Grade 12 in 2018 but it meant that for the first time in 25 years the school did not achieve a 100% matric pass rate.

“It’s sad to say that we had only one learner fail Grade 12 in the past 25 years so, unfortunately, our 100% pass rate is no more for 2018,” said school principal Suzette Truter.

The school had 62 candidates and 64 distinctions.

Their top three learners were:

Mahlatse Makhafola with six distinctions and an average of 85% in all subjects, she achieved 88% in accounting, 81% for maths, 84% for life sciences, 90% for physical sciences, 90% for life orientation, 73% in English home language and 89% for Afrikaans first additional language.

Makhafola wants to pursue a career as a chartered accountant.

“I plan on being an inspiration to others in all that I strive to achieve to show that indeed anything is possible,” she said.

Her hobbies include playing netball and listening to music.

She also has a great interest in politics as “I like to express my views”.

Dimpho Nkwashu got six distinctions and an average 82.2% pass. She scored distinctions in English home language 77%, Afrikaans first additional language 83%, maths 81%, life orientation 86%, geography 8%, life sciences 84% and physical sciences 84%.

She wants to study for an MBChB.

“After qualifying as a doctor I want to specialise in psychiatry because mental health awareness needs as much support as possible at this point. I also plan to work with Doctors Without Borders,” she said.

Nkwashu loves knitting and reading books.

“I also listen to a lot of music and indulge in poetry. Scrapbooking and baking are interests I pursue once in a blue moon,” she said.

Nompumelelo Msiza, with five distinctions and an average of 81.8%, achieved 73% in English home language, 72% for Afrikaans first additional language, 85% for maths, 84% for life orientation, 85% in accounting, 85% in geography and 89% in physical sciences.

She wants to become a mechanical engineer.

“I enjoy swimming, reading books, especially African fiction. and hanging out with my friends,” she said.
