The Glen High school’s top achieving matriculants were Tyrice Arries and Nooreen Bhol.

Arries obtained a 77% pass in English HL, 90% in Afrikaans FAL, 71% for mathematics, 91% for science, 83% for life science, 87% in life orientation and 88% in accounting.

Her overall average was 83.86%.

“Being head girl came with a lot of challenges but I think that has prepared me for university as I had to keep many balls in the air. The prefect group became like family and I will always remember them fondly – they helped to keep me balanced and grounded and I will forever be grateful to my team.”

She was the top learner in mathematics, accounting, Afrikaans, physical science and was awarded academic honours and Cum Laude certificate as well as a medal of merit for achieving academic excellence over a period of 5 years.

“I believe that you should envision what you want and then invest everything you’ve got to achieve your goal. You must never settle for what is comfortable, and then the rest will fall into place,” she said.

She plans to study medicine at the University of Pretoria.

Bhol obtained an overall average of 83.57%.

Her subjects were English HL 78%, Afrikaans FAL 85%, Mathematics 67%, Science 84%, life oreitnation 91%, life science 89% and geography 91%.

She won a thistle award for first place in academics, a math erudite silver medal award for learners who consistently obtained high marks in mathematics since Grade eight, Cum Laude certificate, The Glen High School medal of merit for achieving academic excellence over a period of 5 years and received academic honours for achieving excellence.

She is the top learner in English, geography, life science and life orientation.

Bhol said her journey did not go without any challenges.

“I had family changes regarding my sister, who is also my best friend, moving away, which made the year a little lonely at times,” she said.

“What I found most challenging was that I had to adapt myself to some new teachers in vital subjects. To change teachers in matric can put a strain on one’s method of learning.”

She said her role models were her elder sister, who always found a silver lining in every situation, as well as Audrey Hepburn whom she said “represents grace and intelligence”.

“She was a humanitarian and a feminist and I hope that I can make an impact in the world as she did.”

She plans to study medicine, but is also open to studying human genetics.
