“Wierdapark Primary will now be converted into a high school.”

A new “smart” primary school has officially been opened in Zwartkop, Centurion.

The new school located in Zwartkop on Blinkblaar Street was opened by Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on Wednesday.

The R67 million school consists of 28 classrooms including two smart science laboratories, two smart multi-purpose rooms, one computer laboratory, an Information Communication Technology control room and a library.

Construction on the school started in March of last year.

The school will accommodate grades R to 7.

According to local ward councillor Peter Sutton the school has been opened not only to new pupil registrations but also to the pupils of Wierdapark Primary.

“I have been told that the Gauteng education department made the decision to move the pupils from Wierdapark Primary to the new school,” said Sutton.

The new school, unveiled officially as Centurion Primary School, has been based on the “smart school” model.

This means, according to Sutton, the use of iPads, laptops, network points and technology in general has been incorporated into the construction of the school.

During his address to pupils and their parents, MEC Lesufi said the decision to build the school came as an alternative to the mobile classrooms used at nearby areas.

Lesufi mentioned the recent theft of state of the art equipment from a high-tech school in Tsakane which the department opened less than a week ago.

“This department did not think that this society which had demanded these facilities would steal from its own children,” Lesufi said.

He called on the people of Centurion not to steal from the new school and thereby damage their own children’s future.
