UPDATE: ‘Dros rapist’ back in court

The 20-year-old accused must appear in court today before he can be admitted to an institute for mental evaluation.

Alleged Dros rapist Nicolas Ninow will be back in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed.

The NPA said Ninow got a spot at Weskoppies hospital, where he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

He must, however, appear in court before his admission.

The 20-year-old man is accused of snatching a seven-year-old girl from a play area at a Dros restaurant in Silverton in September of last year.

It was alleged that he forced her into the men’s toilet, where he reportedly raped her.

Ninow has been charged with rape, intimidation and possession of drugs.

Defence lawyer Riaan Du Plessis earlier said a psychiatrist had concluded Ninow was “suicidal”.

Ninow has yet to apply for bail.

*Though the law prohibits identifying someone accused of a sexual offence before this individual has pleaded to the charge, Caxton made an editorial decision to name Ninow following the circumstances around his previous appearance on 2 October.
