SCHOOL: Maragon Olympus is eco-friendly

Each learner had to make 3 bricks, consisting of 2l bottles stuffed with non-biodegradable materials, and then influence two other people or organisations to also each make 3 bricks.

Our motto in the Grade 7 EMS class is: “To make the world a better place for those around us.” With this in mind, the class had an assignment to start a non-profit organisation with the aim of getting their community involved in making Eco bricks.

We also believe that we are busy with more than learning theory, we learn things required in real life, unselfishly changing the lives of real people who have real needs.

Therefore, our project was to help a man called Thomas, who lives with his wife and baby boy in Mamelodi. Thomas is building a safe, dry area outside his shack to cook.

Because he does not have the funds for bricks and mortar and was touched by the environmental impact the Eco-bricks he decided to use it for his project.

Each learner had to make 3 bricks, consisting of 2l bottles stuffed with non-biodegradable materials, and then influence two other people or organisations to also each make 3 bricks.

Although only two more people were to be influenced to get involved, the challenge was to see if more people could get on board. The greatest entrepreneurs in this project ended up being Dewald Beneke, Zander Vermaak and Martin de Bruin.

When we went to provide Thomas with his building material it was evident that a heart was touched and hope was given to a man who wholeheartedly appreciates this deed.

We are never too young to better our world and should never underestimate the value of things that seem insignificant to us.
