‘Robber’ nabbed after seeking help for gunshot wound at east hospital

The suspects were believed to be involved in a robbery in Villieria.

A patient seeking treatment for a bullet wound at the Mamelodi hospital was promptly arrested after police were alerted by nursing staff.

The man had arrived at the hospital complaining that he had been shot. Hospital staff suspicious of the patient’s version, alerted the police, who arrived and arrested the man.

Earlier on Saturday morning, there was a car chase involving police and private security teams during which gunshots were exchanged.

Tshwane east police cluster spokesperson Sergeant Portia Maleka said the suspect was believed to be between 20 and 25-years-old.

“Members of crime prevention unit from Silverton SAPS were parked at the Total garage near Eersterust in Stormvoël Road when they spotted a white Toyota Corolla with no registration plates at the back passing them at a very high speed, chased by a security vehicle.

“The police joined the pursuit. The vehicle drove towards Mamelodi and turned into a boundary road towards the Mamelodi West cemetery.”

The police called for back-up and Mamelodi police, who were nearby, responded, Maleka said.

“The suspects started shooting at the police vehicle and they retaliated. The car chase ended when the suspects drove into a tent in Malaka Street in Mamelodi West.

“The [car] drove through the tent and got stuck after two tyres were punctured,” she said.

Maleka said the suspects managed to escape and flee on foot.

She said the vehicle had multiple bullet holes in the bodywork.

“The police found a gas pistol next to the vehicle on the ground, three cellphones and biltong packets inside the vehicle, and in the boot some packets of cigarettes and a till with an undisclosed amount of money.”

The suspects were believed to be involved in a robbery in Villieria.

Maleka said the Mamelodi police subsequently received a call from Mamelodi hospital about a man who was admitted with a bullet wound.

“They rushed to the hospital and the suspect was arrested. He is currently under police guard.”

The police are investigating and asked the public to come forward with any information that may lead to solving the case.
