Khoisan4 to walk to Union Buildings on Friday

One of their demands is for the coloured identity to be scrapped from Z83 forms and all forms of identity.

After waiting for almost a year a group of Khoisan rights activists has again taken it upon themselves to walk to the Union Buildings to demand answers.

Last December, the so-called Khoisan4 group, led by Chief Khoisan SA, walked from Port Elizabeth to the Union Buildings to submit a memorandum of demands to president Cyril Ramaphosa when he was still the deputy president.

Ramaphosa promised to respond to their grievances, but to date nothing has transpired.

This year they are walking again and are due to arrive at the Union Buildings on Friday.

They are demanding an audience with the president to receive answers to their requests laid out in their memorandum.

Ramaphosa promised he would pay attention when he received the memorandum almost a year ago.

One of their demands is for the coloured identity to be scrapped from Z83 forms and all forms of identity.

The Khoisan community said they wanted formal recognition of the Khoisan language and have the Khoisan declared as the first citizens to originate in South Africa.

“We are not coloured, we are all South Africans,” said Chief Khoisan SA.

The other demands in the memorandum are:

– To be recognised as the first nation of South Africa, and included in decision-making

– For their language to be recognised and made an official language of South Africa.

– To scrap the land claims cut-off date of 1913, which is blocking their claim to be the true owners of the land.

South Africans of all races, religions, creeds and cultures rallied behind the Khoisan4 during their two-week walk.
