LISTEN: Don’t fall for Sassa grocery voucher scam

The scam claims the initiative will run from 2019 until 2020 and will grant all unemployed SA citizens a R2 200 grocery voucher.

An initiative to grant all unemployed South African citizens groceries is a scam, Sassa warned this week.

It said information in this regard circulated on social media was untrue.

The scam claims the initiative will run from 2019 until 2020 and will grant all unemployed SA citizens a R2 200 grocery voucher.

It advises the SA citizens should have a valid SA ID or birth certificate in order to apply for the grant purportedly closing on 23 December 2018.

The SA Social Security Agency’s spokesperson in Gauteng, Nandi Mosia, said no cases had yet been reported of people falling for the scam.

Mosia said Sassa had a programme similar to the scam, which was used as a form of relief.

It was dubbed Social Relief of Distress.

Mosia said beneficiaries had to qualify for its services.

They had to report to the nearest Sassa office, where a formal assessment would ascertain if they qualified or not.

Mosia said this assessment was only done at Sassa offices and in areas announced by Sassa.

She warned beneficiaries to be extra cautious this time of year with their details as this was a peak period for such scams.
