NEWSFLASH: Moreleta Park ‘bomb threat’ cleared

Bomb disposal unit was called in after a member of the public reported receiving a 'suspicious' package.

A bomb threat, which was reported in the Moreleta Park area on Wednesday afternoon, has been cleared.

Police said they received a complaint from a business on the corner of Rooitou and Chesnut street at around 12:30 after a member of the public received a package, which they feared was a bomb.

The area was cordoned off and residents were advised to keep their distance.

However, the K9 and bomb disposal units did a “thorough search and examination of the package before declaring the scene safe,” according to Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Micheal Nel.

“With the help of private security companies we evacuated members of the community for their own safety,” he said

Station commander Colonel Kervin Solomons advised members of the community to avoid  examining any suspicious package that is delivered to them, “especially when they are not expecting any deliveries”.

“Instead keep at a safe distance and immediately report it to the SAPS on the emergency 10111 contact number,” Solomons said.
