UPDATE: East man in court over missing wife

In one of the statements given to the police, Basdeo allegedly admitted to disposing of his wife’s body after she fell in the bathroom during an argument.

A Brooklyn man who is accused of killing his wife is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Prem Emmanuel Basdeo faces charges of murder, perjury and defeating the ends of justice for his alleged involvement in his wife Dawn Basdeo’s disappearance.

Basdeo reported his wife missing to Brooklyn police in June.

He was arrested shortly after Dawn’s disappearance when forensic evidence suggested he was possibly involved in her murder.

Basdeo was denied bail in July by magistrate Disiree Stigling who said the state had a strong case against Basdeo including circumstantial evidence that suggested he may have been linked to his wife’s disappearance.

Dawn’s body remains missing.

The family, with the help of the police and concerned community members, have led several searches for Dawn’s body without any success.

During his bail application, Basdeo denied any involvement in his wife’s disappearance and said her whereabouts were also a concern to him.

“I deny that I murdered my wife. I do not know where my wife is and don’t know whether she is dead or alive,” he said.

In one of the statements given to the police, Basdeo allegedly admitted to disposing of his wife’s body after she fell in the bathroom during an argument.

It is believed that he stood to gain nearly R4-million in insurance payout following his wife’s death.

He reportedly also inherited a substantial amount after the death of his first wife, Neetha, whom he was also accused of murdering 14 years ago.

Neetha was found dead in a shipping container the family lived in while their house was being refurbished.

Basdeo and his son Jordan were acquitted of her murder due to a lack of evidence at the time.
