Four school kids busted for drugs in the east

“Three of the learners arrested were found in the possession of drugs while another was found in possession of R3 650 cash."

Four learners at a Mamelodi West secondary school were arrested on Wednesday morning after a surprise raid uncovered drugs and cash.

Police accompanied by CPF members and the Tshwane metro police raided Jafta Mahlangu secondary school and searched each learner and their school bags. Four were found in possession of drugs and money.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the police conducted the operation after receiving information about drugs at the school.

Maheso said officers were not only looking for drugs, but also for anything related to crime such as dangerous weapons on school premises.

“Our main goal is to see that Mamelodi schools become a crime-free zone,” Maheso said.

“Three of the learners arrested were found in the possession of drugs while another was found in possession of R3 650 cash. The learner could not say where the money was from.”

The surprise raids at schools would continue, Maheso said.

“We spoke to learners about the dangers of weapons such as knives, which are not allowed on school premises or even to carry around while at home, as they could cause serious harm,” he said.

Police also addressed the learners about substance abuse and gangsterism, and how they could destroy their future.”

Jafta Mahlangu school principal Given Kola contacted the parents of the arrested learners to inform them.

She said the school has been experiencing a drug problem, especially among Grade 11 and 12 boys “for a long time” and was happy the operation had happened.

“Recently three learners were suspended from class for possession of drugs and dangerous weapons on school premises.”

Kola said she hoped that this would be an ongoing operation at the school until all the learners refrained from using drugs and carrying dangerous weapons.

A learner who wished to remain anonymous said she was happy with the operation and hoped similar actions would be held at other schools.

Police advised learners to report any crime by dialling 08600 10111.
