VIDEO: Pedro Barbosa taking the music industry by storm

Meet the man with a tremendous voice and a personality to fit.

One of Pretoria’s stellar talents literally began his musical career singing in the shower.

“According to my mom, I used to sing in the shower when I was around six years old. I didn’t speak English very well, so I improvised the lyrics,” Pedro Barbosa told us this week.

Barbosa recently released his first solo album Reborn, and Rekord caught up with the man with a big voice to hear what his story is all about.

Barbosa started his journey in Mozambique, where he was born and started singing from a very young age.

“I only found my love for music when I was about 15, I fell in love with a girl and didn’t know what to do with all the emotions, so I wrote a bunch of stuff and it ended up in songs. I then learned to play the guitar and I moved to South Africa to study music,” he explains.

Barbosa first appeared on the music scene when he performed as part of two bands, both with distinct and unique sounds.

“I was part of a band called Mrs.B. It was a pop-rock project I participated in until 2013. The Barbosa Experience is an African, pop, and Latin sound. Both these projects were more upbeat and designed for the stage. I would describe the type of music we play as entertaining and energetic,” Barbosa said of his older two bands.

“The energy of the guys I perform with on stage makes Mrs.B and The Barbosa Experience completely unique. None of my bandmates are natural African or Latin music players. So we add our own spice into the music, I think there is an underlying rock element to the music, so I believe that gives it its unique flavour.”

Barbosa is very passionate about his first solo project and explained why he felt it was time to express himself in a solo album.

Reborn was a deep album, I think it was the first time I put an album together by myself, well with the help of Mark Beling choosing the songs and producing it of course. But it was about giving parts of myself, I wanted something deep and meaningful.”

Barbosa hopes to be touring the album in the near future and is putting a band together to start performing and make more music videos.

He is also a big fan of performing at festivals, with Mieliepop and the STRAB festivals on the top of his list.

Barbosa currently lives in Pretoria and has been for 18 years.

“I love Pretoria, I would prefer to be close to the sea in a way, but Pretoria is home for me now. I’ve met some great people who took me in as their own. There is a family thing about Pretorians. Also, it’s not as busy as Joburg. I am not a big fan of traffic,” he says.

Barbosa’s essence lies in the connection with his audience – his big personality, loud voice and fun-loving nature fuels this connection. He thrives on this to produce a memorable experience, show after show.
