UPDATE: VIDEO: East gang rape justice wheels rolling – slowly

Mamelodi east police say they are still waiting for a court decision on the high profile gang rape case.

Mamelodi east police said they have handed a gang-rape docket to the court for a decision whether or not to prosecute.

“We are waiting to hear if the court will prosecute,” said police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe.

Mbewe was responding to a query in regards to a recent high-profile gang rape in the area.

The gang rape has local residents up in arms, accusing police of dragging their feet.

Various political organisations have also weighed in.

Most recently DA north chairperson Abel Tau accused police of stalling their investigation by failing to make arrests, “even though they had been given the names of the perpetrators”.

Tau made these remarks during a visit with the woman’s family in Mamelodi West last week Tuesday.

A few weeks ago, the 39-year-old woman reported she was gang-raped in Mamelodi East.

The victim had reportedly asked for a lift home from a group of about five men outside a tavern where she had been. Instead of taking her to her destination, she was drugged and gang-raped in a back room in Mamelodi East.

The woman spent a few days in hospital before being discharged to recuperate at home.

A few days after the alleged rape, residents – led by the ANC Women’s League – marched to the police station to demand the arrest of the suspects.

The marchers told police the men had admitted to intercourse with the woman.

The protesters also handed police used condoms allegedly found at the scene as evidence.

They also claimed that while the suspects were taken to the police station, they were not arrested and neither was a case opened.

A relative of the woman claimed police had since the protest taken a statement from the victim, but no arrests had been made.
