GALLERY: Role of fathers emphasised at east event

“Are we raising a fatherless nation.”

The tough topic of growing up without a father and its effects were discussed during a business breakfast held in Menlo Park on Saturday.

This event was hosted by the Growing up without a father foundation at Loft at Nine.

Charley Pietersen, founder of the foundation and author of Growing up without a father, not only spoke about his personal experience of growing up without a father, but also called on men to be mentors to those who were fatherless.

Former public protector Professor Thuli Madonsela, one of the high-profile speakers at the event, said that many people were broken as a result of being hurt in their past.

Actor, author and musician Zane Meas spoke largely about the importance of knowing where one came from.

“Your ID tells you who you are but who are you,” Meas asked.

Meas also mentioned the importance of fathers being around to lead their families and set an example for their children.

One of the highlights of the business breakfast was when an 80-year-old granny, who had lived her life not knowing her father, received prayers for her to heal her emotional scars.

Attendee Petunia Zitha told Rekord that the business breakfast made her commend herself for having been a single parent who raised two children.

“Women always strive to do the best for their children,” she said.

“Sometimes it gets hard as a single parent, but it is important to always remember who you are doing it for.”
