Gautrain strike to leave commuters stranded

Workers were demanding a 10 percent pay increase, a R1 600 housing allowance and R20 000 incentive bonus.

Gautrain commuters may have to find alternative transport following an announcement workers plan to go strike on Monday.

It was believed ticket sales clerks, drivers, operators and guards affiliated to union United National Transport Union (UNTU) had already served their notice to strike to Gautrain operator, Bombela.

“Bombela has been given a 48-hour notice that our members will embark on a protected strike from Monday.” general secretary Steve Harris said adding the Centurion and Hatfield stations would be affected.

He said the decision to strike was taken by workers on Monday after talks deadlocked last week.

Workers were demanding a 10 percent pay increase, a R1 600 housing allowance and R20 000 incentive bonus while Bombela offered only a 8.5 percent salary increase and no further incentive.

Harris apologised for the inconvenience the strike would cause commuters.

“In accordance with South Africa’s constitution and labour legislation, UNTU members at the Gautrain has no alternative than to embark on a strike to try and force their employer to agree to their demands. It is UNTU’s last resort.”

Bombela could not be reached for comment.
