Mamelodi women see red over tavern gang rape

The community wanted to know why the police were allowing the perpetrators to roam free.

Members of the ANC Women’s League have demanded men who raped a 39-year-old Mamelodi tavern patron be arrested.

The league members marched to the Mamelodi East police station to make their voices heard.

It was alleged the 39-year-old woman was gang-raped on Saturday evening in a nearby house.

ANC Women’s League local leader Lizzy Dlamini said the community demanded action.

“The victim was in a tavern in Mamelodi West when four or five men took her to a nearby house where they raped her multiple times.

The next morning, locals found her naked and took her to hospital,” she said.

Dlamini said the community wanted to know why the police were allowing the perpetrators to roam free.

“A case has not been opened because police say the victim has to open it. She’s traumatised in hospital and can’t even walk properly. We demand the police arrest these men.”

Police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe said he was aware of the allegation but was unable to provide further details.
