Father wants ‘justice’ in east hit-and-run

A father wants closure in the death of his 29-year-old biker son who was killed in an apparent hit-and-run incident on the N4.

The father of young motorcyclist, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident earlier this year, has asked for anyone with information on the incident to please come forward.

The incident took place on the N4 highway on Saturday, 26 May at between 17:45- 18:00 when 29-year-old Jean Goosen and a friend were driving near the N4/N1 intersection.

Goosen overtook some cars and when his co-biker followed, he saw his friend was lying on the ground, according to police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato.

Sepato said there were no witnesses to provide police with information on the vehicle involved, but there was a reason to believe that Goosen was hit by a car.

“A woman who was driving close to Goosen when the accident happened managed to contact the police and paramedics but was not able to give information on the colour of the vehicle,” Sepato said.

“It seems the incident may have happened too quickly for witnesses to see the registration.”

Goosen was certified dead on the scene.

His father, Jaques Goosen, said the family wanted justice for their son’s death for the sake of closure.

“We want to move on knowing that there is justice for our son and that someone is held accountable.”

He said things have been hard for the family since Goosen’s death, but they take comfort in knowing that he was not alone at his time of death.

“People were very helpful after the accident, an off-duty doctor tried to help while others were calling the ambulance,” he said.

“Our lives will never be the same again.”

He appealed to members of the public with any information that will help the police with the investigation to come forward.

“Someone must have seen something,” he said.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Sepato said the police could not pursue a murder charge as they were still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The court would be able to test the intent and, if it has sufficient reason based on evidence, the charge could be changed to murder,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Constable Michael Mashilo on 076-249-8733 or the station’s branch commander 082- 822-8218.

Jean Goosen (29).
