Library operating hours may be extended

Libraries could be open until 22:00 on weekdays.

The Tshwane metro plans to improve access to libraries for residents by extending operating hours.

“We are in the process of investigating the implementation of extending the operating hours of the city’s libraries to ensure access to study facilities,” Tshwane department of community and social services’ senior executive support specialist Marius Redelinghuys said.

Should the operational hour extension be approved, libraries would be open until 22:00 on weekdays and 17:00 on weekends.

“Our key focus is on rolling out a comprehensive after-school programme, which will include recreational activities and homework assistance to youth,” Redelinghuys said.

He noted that the pressing matter was to promote access to study facilities for learners and students.

Previously, metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo explained that libraries were used for multiple reasons, including to make use of Wi-Fi, photocopies, using computers as well as reading newspapers and magazines.

Local community libraries can be found on the Tshwane metro’s website.
