GALLERY: Wollies celebrates fifth birthday

To walk the dogs, one had to make donations, while entry into the cattery required cat-lovers to take a sachet of catnip.

The Wollies Animal Project in the north of Pretoria celebrated its fifth birthday last Saturday in a unique way.

Hundreds of animal-lovers could take the shelter’s dogs for a walk or treat the furry cattery residents some catnip.

To walk the dogs, one had to make donations, while entry into the cattery required cat-lovers to take a sachet of catnip.

Helene Fick, who fosters cats for Wollies, said nine of 10 rescued adult cats and brought to Wollies, suffered from depression and stress. As a result, these cats “don’t make it.”

“People think animals are a decoration. Leave the couch behind – leave the cat behind,” Fick said.

She added people generally don’t adopt cats older than three months and therefore when adult cats enter the cattery, it is a “lifelong situation.”

Sydney (SJ) Ruffles (11), a grade 5 learner at Magalieskruin Primary School, donated R1 000 to the animal shelter on Saturday.

The boy raised the funds by selling raffle tickets for a drone he got for his birthday.

Sydney’s mom, Lizle Ruffles, said he did charity work in Kameeldrift over weekends but Wollies was his favourite.

He has a black belt in taekwondo and “skipped practice to be at Wollies”.

Cilla Trexler, Wollies founder, said the event was a huge success.

Ten dogs and two cats were adopted on the day.

Donations also streamed in.

A new children’s playground on the premises was launched at the event.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us,” Trexler said.

The next Wollies event will be the “Rough & Tough” walk (with an obstacle course) on Saturday, 16 June.
