SCHOOL: Dove’s Nest with Southdowns College – Helping them help others

“The donation comprised three pallets of 10 600 nappies and our learners donated sanitary pads to the older girls and spent time with babies in the care of Dove’s Nest."

Recently, the Southdowns College grade 9 technology class held a silent auction of projects created in class, to raise funds for Dove’s Nest place of safety.

The non-profit organisation (NPO) cares for abandoned or unwanted babies and children.

The auction raised R10 930 which will be handed over to the organisation based in Lyttelton.

“Service is one of the five pillars of Southdowns College and is an important part of the school ethos and curriculum”, says Estean Stirrat, head of technology, life sciences teacher and assistant grade 11 tutor.

“It always amazes me how our learners improvise with old materials, the ideas they come up with and in the end how proud they are to showcase their transformations to the public.”

Following the auction, Grade 11 learners along with Mark Smith, high school principal, and Madrey Bekker, head of life sciences and outreach, visited Doves Nest to hand over a very generous donation from Dischem Foundation.

“The donation comprised three pallets of 10 600 nappies and our learners donated sanitary pads to the older girls and spent time with babies in the care of Dove’s Nest,” says Bekker.

“We are truly grateful for the support that the foundation have provided to the initiative.”
