East residents warned of new home robbery tactic

“The two men were armed and pointed at her with the firearms, she tried to reverse and they shot in her direction.”

The police have advised residents to be on high alert when they find gates to their properties open and an unknown vehicle parked inside the yard.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said this comes after an incident was reported in Faerie Glen where a 40-year-old man arrived home on Saturday, 21 April at around 14:00 and saw an unknown man in his yard.

“The suspect pointed a firearm at him and instructed him to reverse back to the street. The man then contacted his private security company when the suspects fled in a BMW,” said Weilbach.

He later discovered that his house had been broken into and jewellery and a television stolen.

A coordinated effort between the police and a private security company traced three suspects – aged 23, 24 and 31 – to Mamelodi, where they were arrested.

“The vehicle that was used by the suspects was confirmed stolen and three firearms, housebreaking equipment and the goods stolen in the housebreaking incident were recovered.”

The suspects will appear in court this week.

In a separate incident on Sunday, 22 April at about 10:15, a 56-year-old woman arrived home in Lynnwood Manor and found a white Ford Ranger reverse-parked in her yard.

Weilbach said the woman was surprised and tried to see whose vehicle it was when two unknown men and a woman exited her house.

“The two men were armed and pointed at her with the firearms. She tried to reverse and they shot in her direction.”

She managed to evade the attackers, who fled the scene.

She later found that they had broken into the house and stolen a TV and a laptop.

The Lyttelton police are investigating. No arrests have been made.
