Learner intake applications to open soon

The Gauteng Department of Education will open its online application system on Monday.

The Gauteng Department of Education will open its online application system, for grades 1 and 8 for next year, on Monday.

The department urged parents to apply early, saying it would enable them to acquire the necessary learning and teaching materials.

The online application system will open on Monday at 08:00 and close at midnight on 28 May on www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.

The department advised parents to use Google Chrome to access the website, as it is faster than other browsers, it said.

A parent can apply for space in a maximum of five schools, using the following to indicate preference:

– Home address

– Work address

– Sibling (the sibling should not be in grades 7 or 12 in the current academic year)

– School of choice

– Previous school

– Schools of focused learning/school of specialisation (for grade 8 learners)

– Applications for learners with special education needs will be done at the district office.

The department said the placement of learners will start on 18 July and finish on 31 October.

“It is important for parents to confirm or decline placement offers within seven days of receiving the offer,” said the department.

“This will fast-track placement at the relevant schools. Failure to confirm or decline an offer will result in the offer being withdrawn.”

The department said it was confident online application was the way to go as it offered many advantages for parents, schools and the department.

“It is convenient for parents, as they can apply from their PC, mobile smartphones or tablet at any time. This has eliminated queues at some of the schools, thereby saving time for the parents.”

It said the system was transparent, fair, eliminated manipulation and human indiscretions and parents can follow progress.

Since its inception in 2017, the system has processed 90 994 applications and 90 percent of all timeous applicants were placed, according to the department.

The department said the system had been improved.

It now has quicker response to queries and has eliminated the duplication of learner profiles since it now recognised learners by their ID numbers.
