UPDATE: Bronkhorstspruit crash survivor on road to recovery

Doctors had delayed the operation fearing he was “too weak” to survive it.

The man who survived the Bronkhorstspruit crash that killed his girlfriend will go under the knife on Friday.

Louis Esterhuizen (23), was the sole survivor of the collision that claimed the lives of three, including his girlfriend Michelle Brits about a month ago.

His mother Betty Klymsit said doctors would operate on his arm and leg.

She also confirmed Esterhuizen’s health had improved that he was was no longer critical.

“[It is] going much better with my son. He is in high-care now.”

Brits was laid to rest three weeks ago during an emotional ceremony.

“The funeral was very sad and emotional,” said Klymsit.

Doctors had previously delayed operating on Esterhuizen as he was “too weak” and they were not sure if he would survive.

He suffered numerous broken bones on the right side of his body in the crash.

The couple were returning from Cape Town where they had celebrated Esterhuizen’s birthday.
