Police warn motorists about new hijacking and robbery trick

As soon as they drive under the bridge to avoid the lane with the fire, a rock gets thrown from above, damaging the car.

Do not stop to inspect any damage to your car from objects in the road or rocks thrown at you, police have warned motorists.

It could be an attempt by criminals to get you to stop your car so that they can rob you.

The latest such trick used by robbers involves starting a fire on one lane of the road, under bridges.

This forces the motorist to slow down, which is when a rock is thrown from above to damage the car.

Motorists are robbed when they stop their vehicles to inspect the damage.

Other tricks involve intentionally placing obstacles in the road to damage car tyres or force motorists into stopping their vehicles.

Police spokesperson Captain Marissa van der Merwe told Rekord that five such incidents had been reported to police over the past three weeks in Tshwane.

In a previous incident, a motorist’s vehicle were shot at, but the driver did not stop until they reached home.

She further urged motorists to not stop and try to inspect damage to the car, as this is what the criminals want motorists to do.

Van der Merwe said it was important that motorists report such attacks to the police, even if there is only minor damage to the vehicle.

“It will help us to establish all the crime hot spot areas and properly plan crime prevention operations,” said Van der Merwe.

Police patrols are monitoring affected areas such as the R104 and the N1, she said.
