UPDATE: Police still searching for Bronkhorstspruit magistrate murderer

No arrests have been made yet and the case was transferred to the provincial police.

No arrests have been made by Monday for the murder of Bronkhorstspruit magistrate Victor Mabunda.

The matter had been transferred to the provincial police for investigation, said spokesperson Lt Kay Makhubela.

“It is still under investigation,” Makhubela said.

Mabunda was shot four times at his home two weeks ago in what is believed to have been an assassination.

Chief prosecutor Matric Luphondo said other justice officials had received threatening messages since the killing.

“Shortly after magistrate Victor Mabunda’s murder, some of the prosecutors he was handling cases with received threats,” he said.

Lupondo spoke at the slain magistrate’s memorial service in Bronkhorstsruit on Wednesday, 17 January.

He had high praise for the slain magistrate.

“He stood for justice and had the admirable gift of simplifying the law to members of the public.”

Makhubela said on Monday: “We do not know how many people are involved, but police are following leads.”

An eye-witness was said to have seen a green Toyota Rav4 leave the scene after the shooting.

According to police, nothing was stolen from the victim.

Mabunda worked in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court since 2000 and was known for his firm stance on the law.

He was buried on Saturday at his birth home of Zava village in Limpopo.
