Officials, metro cops caught on the wrong side of the law

“Allegations are that they took a R4 000 bribe from a motorist.”

Six vehicle registration officials were due to appear in court on Monday on corruption charges.

They include vehicle examiners and administration staff who were arrested last week in connection with fraud and corruption charges.

The officials were arrested at two privately-owned vehicle testing stations.

“Six officials – three men and three women – who were arrested in Mamelodi are expected to appear in the Pretoria commercial crimes court this morning,” said road traffic management corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane.

Zwane said it was alleged that the suspects had fraudulently issued roadworthy certificates to vehicles that were not physically taken to the testing stations for examination.

“Members of the RTM anti-corruption unit, South African Police Service organised crime unit and the Gauteng traffic department’s compliance unit raided the Mamelodi vehicle testing station in Tshwane and the First Class Vehicle Inspections in Midrand, Johannesburg,” he said.

Zwane also said the three officials arrested in Midrand were expected to appear at the Johannesburg commercial crimes court on Tuesday, 23 January.

He said more suspects from these stations were expected to be arrested.

Zwane said fraud and corruption involving the issuing of roadworthy certificates was a major concern as it contributed to accidents and vehicle crime.

“Five roadworthy testing stations have been raided in the past month and investigations revealed widespread malpractices. Law enforcement authorities will continue their clampdown in an effort to fight corruption and improve road safety,” he said.

The RTMC urged members of the public to report traffic-related fraud and corruption, which will be treated confidentially, at 0861 400 800 or email ntacu@rtmc.co.za.

Zwane said on Monday morning two more Tshwane metro police officers were arrested in the city near the police department headquarters in WF Nkomo Street.

“Allegations are that they took a R4 000 bribe from a motorist,” he said.
