Matrics who failed exams must not lose hope, says mayor

Learners who failed matric had multiple options to consider, like getting a re-mark or registering for supplementary exams.

“Learners who failed their matric must not lose hope,” said Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga.

“We want to urge those who did not pass matric that all is not lost,” he told the audience at the mayoral matric awards held at Tshwane House on Wednesday.

He said learners who failed matric had multiple options to consider, like getting a re-mark or registering for supplementary exams.

“You can also consider the second-chance programme, or you can take a bridging course or rewrite those subjects.”

Msimanga asked families, neighbours and communities to support all the Grade 12 pupils who did not pass their exams.

He also awarded a number of top-achieving students R5 000 each, which could be used towards their future endeavours at any higher learning institution of their choice.

Gauteng province has achieved a pass rate of 85.1 percent; the same pass rate as in 2016, placing the province in second place.

He congratulated Jacqueline Janse van Rensburg, from Hoërskool Oos-Moot, who scooped the top-performing matriculant title in Gauteng.

Van Rensburg received nine distinctions, including the third-best mark in advanced programme mathematics in the country.

“I take off my hat to you. You are an inspiration to many young women in the city and the country at large,” he said.
