UPDATE: ‘Mooinooi couple killers’ to re-appear in court

"The eight 8 face two counts of murder, kidnapping, robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, defeating the course of justice and rape.”

The six men and two women arrested for the kidnapping and killing of the Mooinooi two – Joey and Anisha van Niekerk – will appear in court again later this week.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane said the suspects made a brief appearance in the Brits magistrate’s court on Monday when the case was postponed to 18 and 19 January “for further investigations”.

Talane said the second woman, Mercia Witney van Rooi (21), handed herself over to the police last week while the men were arrested earlier.

“The eight – including Aaron Sithole, 23, Koos Strydom, 53, Jack Mokotedi, 18, Alex Mudau, 36, Moses Rakubu, 33, Vincent Strydom, 29, and Maruschka Opperman, 18 – face two counts of murder, kidnapping, robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, defeating the course of justice and rape,” said Talane.

The couple were reportedly on their way to Pretoria on 10 December when they went missing.

On December 16, the car the two were travelling in was found in Magaliesburg burnt.

And on December 28, what were believed to be the remains of the couple, were discovered in a bush in Buffelsfontein, near Mooinooi.

Talane said the police still awaited DNA results that would confirm if the remains were indeed of the couple.

Anisha’s brother, Wynand van Niekerk had reportedly said that his sister and her partner were raped, tortured and murdered.

The suspects were also expected to make a bail application.
