UPDATE: Bulls player in court after nightclub assault

He is accused of assaulting a 38-year-old man at a Pretoria East nightclub

Blue Bulls under-21 player Dylan van der Walt recently appeared in court after he assaulted a 38-year-old man at a Pretoria nightclub in last year.

Louis Pienaar (38) was knocked unconscious by Van der Walt at Madison Avenue nightclub in November 2017.

Pienaar spent close to a month in ICU after the incident.

His father Pine said his son was recovering at home recovering. “He is at home now, feeling a lot better.”

Garsfontein police spokesperson Ilze Jones told Rekord that Van der Walt was arrested on Monday on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous body harm.

“The suspect appeared before the court on the day he was arrested,” she said. “He was later released on bail and is expected to appear again on 8 February.”

Pienaar was out with his cousin Christian Cronje when the assault took place.

Cronje earlier told Rekord that a group of rugby players started the trouble after he and Pienaar were about to leave the club around 04:00.

“Louis and I were dancing when we saw a group of guys on the dance floor. As we were staring at them, they asked what we were looking at,” he said.

“I could see that they wanted to start a fight, so I told my friend we must go home. The guys threatened to beat us. As Louis left the club, I had an exchange of words with one of them trying to defuse the situation.”

Cronje said one of the players (allegedly Van der Walt) assaulted Pienaar in the parking area. Pienaar was knocked out cold and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital.

On Monday afternoon, Blue Bulls CEO Barend van Graan confirmed that Van der Walt was contracted with the franchise.
