East security operation nets three

Cloned cars sought by Ga-Rankuwa SAPS seized.

Two “cloned” vehicles were recovered and three people arrested in an operation by a security group last week.

(Car cloning is when an identification number from a legally registered vehicle is used to hide the identity of a stolen vehicle.)

The Brinant security group operation was conducted on the R21 near Fountains Valley at 22:30 on Thursday, 14 December.

Brinant spokesperson Barney de Bruin said his team had received a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle.

The vehicle was placed under observation in the Pretoria CBD and three men were subsequently arrested.

One of the arrested men gave up information about the location of a hijacked VW Polo in Polokwane. De Bruin said a company representative had been sent to recover this vehicle.

A Hyundai, which had been reported stolen in Ga-Rankuwa, was also recovered.

The organisations involved in the operation included the Pretoria dog unit, Gauteng traffic saturation unit, Tracker investigation department, Brinant intelligence and SA insurance crime bureau.

The men were handed over to local authorities at the scene.
